Intersectionality is the study of identity that looks at how different aspects of identity intersect with each other to form specific and differing experiences of oppression. Zora Neale Hurston deals with the intersection of race and gender through the story of Janie in Their Eyes Were Watching God. Businesses that establish offices overseas can face extensive liability exposure for ill-advised personnel decisions and unsound loss-control protocols (Maatman, 2000). Ã¢â¬Å"Sound implementation of personnel policies and practices aimed at combating sexual harassment can help minimize these risks. Proactive HR administration can preserve corporate reputation and brand image, enhance recruiting and retention of a competitive workforce and avoid violation of international sexual harassment laws (Maatman, 2000). To reduce incidents, companies should brief expatriates on regulations in regards to male and female behavior at work. When harassment takes place in an overseas establishment, it is less clear whose standards should apply Ã¢â¬â those of the host country or those of the home country (Hardman et al. , 1996). Ã¢â¬Å"If freedom from unwanted sexual advances or overtly discriminatory behavior is considered a universal human right, then firms should protect this right in their operations worldwide (Hardman et al. , 1996). Ã¢â¬ Ã¢â¬Å"U. S. ased corporations must be aware that their American employees have the statutory right to sue for this discrimination occurring throughout the world (Maatman, 2000). Ã¢â¬ Ã¢â¬Å"Applicants, workers and terminated employees who are U. S. citizens and are subjected to discriminatory practices anywhere in the world may file a discrimination charge against their U. S. employers (Maatman, 2000). Ã¢â¬ There is no easy answer to the problem of sexu al harassment and the misunderstanding that can occur across many different cultures. There are two types of sexual harassment that are recognized by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the courts (Philips, 1997). They are as follows: Quid Pro quo and hostile environment sexual harassment. Quid Pro quo (this for that) happens when an employee makes it clear to a manager or supervisor that his or her sexual demands are unwanted and as a result of that loses an economic benefit, such as employment, an increase in salary or employment. Only managers and supervisors, not coworkers, can engage in quid pro quo harassment (Scarborough Zimmerer, 2006). A hostile environment sexual harassment is a sexual discrimination and the harassment must be harsh enough to alter the victimÃ¢â¬â¢s employment conditions and create an abusive work area. A hostile environment usually requires a pattern of offensive sexual behavior rather than a single, isolated remark or display (Scarborough Zimmerer, 2006). Ã¢â¬Å"Most sexual harassment charges arise from claims of a hostile environment (Scarborough Zimmerer, 2006). Ã¢â¬ Ã¢â¬Å"Some experts believe male-dominated workplaces are likely to be the most hostile to women (Zwettler, 1997). Management can enforce a policy against sexual harassment. This policy should first, clearly define what behaviors constitute sexual harassment, secondly, State in clear language that harassment will not be tolerated in the workplace, thirdly, identify the responsibilities of supervisors and employees in preventing harassment and lastly, spell out steps to take in reporting an incident of sexual harassment (Sca rbourough and Zimmerer, 2006). The effects of sexual harassment differ from person to person. It depends on how severe and how long the harassment went on. Victims of severe or chronic sexual harassment can suffer the same mental effects as someone who has been raped. Some of the health and psychological effects of sexual harassment are relocating to another city, another job, or another school, loss of career, absenteeism, and stress in relationships, decreasing work and school performance, guilt, headaches, feeling violated, eating disorders, having angry feelings towards the harasser and many more. In summary, some things you need to remember if you are being harassed is donÃ¢â¬â¢t quit your job, act quickly, get support from your coworkers, ridicule the harasser, use your union grievance procedures, notify the company, keep a diary, and find other victims (Moore White, 1997). Preventing sexual harassment is the best solution, and the key to prevention is educating employees about what constitutes sexual harassment (Scarbourough and Zimmerer, 2006). MTV is a television station that is hip and trendy, while it still covers the main issues of today's society. MTV is known for its flamboyance, the host/hostess are dressed very trendy, the guest are famous and rich, and the shows are informative but not to serious. PBS on the other hand is a station that has all the things that MTV offers but uses subtle antics. While MTV uses it flamboyance for recognition, PBS uses its low-key profile that mainly focused on family and education. The broadcasting of MTV and PBS informs the public of various issues concerning the news, politics, education, and is also a source of entertainment PBS is devoted to the education of adults and children. Its has a wide range of shows that are for education and the topics are interesting. In which PBS has used for their advantage to gain popularity. The shows are different each week, PBS only has a few sitcoms that air weekly. Most of the free airtime is used for shows that are educational but interesting. The shows have topics that deal with animals, wars, the growing of flowers, cars, childcare etc. The topics are unlimited and that is what keeps people watching PBS you never really know what youre going to see. Politics have been going on forever some talk about it and some over look it. PBS has many politicians that come and talk about their beliefs on the government and the effects of it on economy. They talk about the downfall of the government or how proud they are about their government. Usually around the time of elections PBS airs shows with the two candidates debating on each others. Sometimes it gets heated and you see the look of discuss on their faces. When watching the debates it makes you think about the candidates beliefs and choices before you vote. In the evening time you can turn to PBS and watch the news. The news is interesting but it doesnt use all the high tech graphics that most big networks do. The announcer talks about all the issues across the world. They tell the news and at the end of the broadcast they tell weather and some of the upcoming shows on PBS. They rarely talk about sports usually about once a week they speak of a recognized sporting event. They were generally a business and brides did not get to choose who they were married to. They are quite different compared to now and were not at all based on love or having a family. Weddings were also used to increase farm size. Their weddings were quite remarkable. Many now used customs originated in the Elizabethan period. Elizabethan weddings also used some customs that are not used now. For example, dowries were to be given to the husband. A dowry could be anything from property to money to cattle. The woman to be married became property of the man. The woman had very little say in who she was married to. It was often common to meet the new partner for the first time on the wedding day. Although it is a feature of Elizabethan weddings it tended to happen more of children from the nobility and upper classes. If they were lucky, a small painted picture would be sent over for approval. In WebsterÃ¢â¬â¢s Handy College Dictionary, the definition for a donkey is Ã¢â¬Å"an assÃ¢â¬ or Ã¢â¬Å"a stupid or obstinate personÃ¢â¬ . One would presume that with such a meaning, the Democratic Party, one of the main political parties in the United States, would not be associating itself with such a negative symbol. The first use of the Ã¢â¬Å"donkeyÃ¢â¬ as the Democratic symbol occurred during Andrew JacksonÃ¢â¬â¢s run for president in 1828. Because of his populist views and the slogan, Ã¢â¬Å"Let the people ruleÃ¢â¬ , his opponents tried to label him as a Ã¢â¬Å"jackassÃ¢â¬ , but Jackson used the name-calling and turned it into his advantage by placing the donkey on his campaign posters (The Democratic). Since its first application in 1828 the Ã¢â¬Å"donkeyÃ¢â¬ is a symbol that is now clearly associated with the Democratic Party. Security our border is essential to securing the homeland. The country faces a different set of challenges with non-Mexicans who are caught crossing the border illegally. Mexican illegal immigrants are initially detained when they are apprehended. The problem is that the detention facilities do not have enough room for accommodation. As a result, about four of every five non-Mexican illegal immigrants that are caught are released in society and asked to return for a court date. When the date arrives, about 75 percent of those released do not show up at the court.In 2004, only 30,000 of the 160,000 non-Mexicans were sent home for being caught coming across the southwest. (http://www. whitehouse. gov/news/releases/2005/11/20051128-7. html) The practice of catch and release had been the governmentÃ¢â¬â¢s policy for decades. It was an unwise policy and the government has plans to end it. To help end catch and release, there is need to increase the capacity in the detention facilities. The president signed a legislation supported by members of the Arizona delegation in 2005 to increase the number of beds in detention facilities.One of the most effective tools the government has in this effort is a process called expedited removal. Under expedited removal, non-Mexicans are detailed and placed into streamlined proceedings. It allows the government to deport them at an average of 32 days, almost three times faster than usual. In other words, the government is cutting through bureaucracy. The program was so successful that the defense secretary expanded it al up and down the border. Technology helps an individual have broader reach and more effectiveness. In Tucson agents on the ground are directing unmanned aerial technology in the sky, and they are acting rapidly on illegal immigration or illegal activities they may see from the drones.Since these unmanned flights began, agents have intercepted a lot of drugs on the border that otherwise and people that otherwise have made it through. The draw down of National Guard troops along the US-Mexican border should be stopped or alternative border security improvements provided because of problems with a high-tech Ã¢â¬Å"virtual fenceÃ¢â¬ project.Ã¢â¬Å"Project 28Ã¢â¬ project, a 28-mile array of radars and surveillance cameras near sasabo, indicate that broad implementation of a Ã¢â¬Å"virtual fenceÃ¢â¬ along the nationÃ¢â¬â ¢s southern border wonÃ¢â¬â¢t happen soon. Project 28 is part of a national plan to secure the US Mexico border with physical barriers and high-tech detention capabilities. (Carl B, 2007) Curbing illegal immigration and security the nearly 2,000 mile, (3,200-kilometer) south western border are hot topics in this US election year. Washington has pledged to complete 67 miles (1,070 kilometers) of new barriers by the close of 2008, despite resistance from landowners and environmentalists.Based on along standing relationship of cooperation and mutual assistance, US customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the General Customs Administration of Mexico (GCAM) have begun the implementation of those action items designed to guarantee the secure and efficient flow of trade between the two nations. (Carl B, 2007) For purposes of developing and implementing initiative identified in the US/Mexico Border Partnership Plan, CBP and GCAM have created special working groups: the Border working Grou p, the Enforcement Working Group and the Technology and Customs Procedures Working Group.These groups have been working on a broad range of initiatives namely; 1. Extending and harmonizing the service hours in coordination with the trade communities, at the entry ports located at the common border. 2. Ensuring the Advanced Passenger Information System in Mexico is implemented. This will help collect and share data concerning air passengers arriving to and departing from United States and Mexico. 3. Deploying gamma ray machines at our railroad crossings. 4. Exchanging core data on every transaction occurring through the common border in an electronic environment.5. testing and implementing new technologies for instance electronic seals 6. Fraudulent trade investigations should be conducted jointly. This has led to significant seizures of undervalued and illegally transshipped goods. 7. Devolving systems to monitor in-transit shipments through our territories. 8. Seizing illegal cash transported by air passengers. The fence is only two and a half feet high and people argue that it cannot stop illegal immigrants. The Mexican border fence as completed is a roughly 30 inch high barrier built primarily of wooden stakes and chicken wire. Chicken wire could not be provided for the entire length of the fence due to budget constraints.These portions therefore consist only of wooden fence posts driven into the ground roughly every twelve feet with small-hand written in between bearing the words Ã¢â¬Å"security fence). (Carl B, 2007) Governor Janet Napolitano on We dnesday March 08 ordered more National Guardsmen posted at the Mexican border to help stop illegal immigrants and curb related crimes. National Guard troops have worked at the border since 1988, but Napolitano signed and order authorizing commanders to station an unspecified number of additional soldiers there to help federal agents.Once the funding is approved, the troops will monitor crossing points, assist with cargo inspection and operate surveillance cameras, according to the order. About 170 national Guardsmen are already posted at the nationÃ¢â¬â¢s busiest illegal entry point, where they assist with communications, fence construction and antidrug efforts. Today, approximately the same number of illegal crossings occurs on the southern border as occurred four years ago.That averages about 5,000 illegal crossing per day and approximately 5 million illegal crossings. S Sec-26-172 to Ã¢â¬Å"mobilize all or any partÃ¢â¬ of the National Guard when the Governor proclaims an emergency or Ã¢â¬Å"deems it necessary to protect lives or property.It should also seek funding to create the Ã¢â¬Å"Arizona Border PatrolÃ¢â¬ as a division of the Department of Public Safety-Law enforcement will play a significant role in safeguarding Arizona from ongoing effects of illegal immigration.
